Racket sports clubs in New York City: find a group at your level
Find NYC tennis, badminton, squash and padel groups, with women-first options, solo joining routes and clear distinctions between lessons and social play.
You have the evening free and want a game. Your friends are busy, the court booking asks for a partner, and a club’s “beginner” session gives you no clue whether you need to keep a rally going already.
In New York City, organised racket sessions can solve the partner problem. The important detail is what happens after you arrive: teaching from the first serve, matched games, or a social event for people who already play.
This guide covers tennis, badminton, squash and padel in New York City, New York, US. It includes women-focused routes alongside broader communities. For other sports, start with our NYC sports-community guide.
Choose a session before committing to a club
Start with your actual experience in that sport. Being a confident tennis player does not tell an organiser how much squash instruction you need.
| What you want | Route to investigate | Location | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Women-focused tennis with a wider LGBTQ+ community | Metropolitan Tennis Group’s women’s programme | Events across NYC; current listings include Roosevelt Island and Flushing Meadows | Event level, venue, registration and membership requirements |
| A tennis introduction in an LGBTQ+-centred setting | Rainbow Rackets | NYC; venue depends on the event | Whether the selected session teaches total beginners |
| Badminton games without bringing a partner | NY Badminton Center open play | Select the NYC venue in the booking | Playing level, minimum skills and session confirmation |
| Women-only squash or a first coached introduction | Open Squash | Bryant Park and Financial District, Manhattan | Exact clinic level and women-only eligibility policy |
| Padel with other players at a similar level | Padel Haus clinics and Open Plays | Williamsburg and Dumbo, Brooklyn | Clinic versus match format, level, equipment and visitor access |
Before paying, ask: “I’m coming alone, and this is what I can do so far. Does this session include instruction, and will you organise the people I play with?” Add the full cost, travel time and cancellation terms to your decision. A court rental and an organised social session can put very different responsibilities on you.

Metropolitan Tennis Group: a women-focused route into NYC tennis
Metropolitan Tennis Group’s women’s programme welcomes women-identified players, explicitly including trans, bi+, pan-, queer and lesbian women, as well as non-binary, gender-nonconforming and gender-fluid players. It also welcomes straight allies to its women’s events. Describing this programme as women-only would misrepresent its published welcome.
The programme covers social, recreational and competitive tennis, including women’s and mixed doubles. Its membership spans beginners through advanced players, so choose the event level rather than treating the whole club as one ability group.
The current club calendar lists indoor events at Roosevelt Island Racquet Club and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, including level-specific drill-and-play and doubles formats. That gives you a concrete next step: inspect an event’s entry requirements, then ask the organisers which format suits your experience. Confirm registration and membership conditions before joining.
Rainbow Rackets: tennis for LGBTQ+ beginners
Rainbow Rackets centres NYC’s LGBTQ+ beginner tennis community, with beginner-friendly play opportunities and social gatherings. Its stated welcome includes people picking up a racket for the first time and those returning after a long break.
This is a route to investigate when learning the game and feeling comfortable in the group are equally important. Read the selected event description carefully: a beginner-centred organisation can still run sessions that expect some playing experience.
Choose an event through the organiser’s site and confirm the NYC venue, equipment arrangements and amount of teaching included. Events outside the city require a separate travel decision; an organisation’s NYC base does not make every event local.
NY Badminton Center: open play with an explicit skill threshold
NY Badminton Center’s open-play rules say you can join alone or with friends and play with other people signed up to the group. Players are asked to select the level that matches their skills.
Its beginner category already expects a basic understanding of badminton and how to serve. If you have never played, ask about instruction before reserving an open-play place. Intermediate sessions expect knowledge of the rules, several shot types and movement towards the shuttle; the advanced description adds tactical understanding.
The centre’s website lists NYC routes including Flushing, Queens, and Manhattan, and directs players towards level-based community groups. Check the venue attached to your chosen booking rather than relying on a general club address.
Open play can be shortened or cancelled if too few people sign up. Confirm the session before travelling, particularly if your evening depends on a long cross-city journey. The published open-play page is a general joining route, not a verified women-only session.
Open Squash: women-only clinics and coached first steps
Open Squash’s women’s programme includes women-only clinics and social round robins at its Manhattan facilities. Bryant Park is at 25 West 39th Street; its other current facility is in the Financial District.
The women’s programme distinguishes beginner, progression and low-intermediate coaching from round-robin play. A round robin gives you games against other participants; a clinic puts more emphasis on learning and drills. Check the session’s own level description, as the overview and timetable present beginner ratings differently. Ask the team to place you if you have no rating.
For a first attempt, the general introductory clinic offers coaching and loan racquets and goggles; non-marking shoes are required. Follow the current booking instructions for the advertised free first clinic. That general introduction is a separate route from the women-only programme, so confirm the session’s eligibility if a women-only setting is part of your decision.
Current programmes operate at Bryant Park and FiDi. The website labels Williamsburg as a 2027 location, so do not plan a visit there yet.
Padel Haus: Brooklyn clinics and organised games
Padel Haus describes clinics for different levels and Open Plays where participants can arrive alone or with a partner to meet players of a similar level. Its Open Plays are described as intra-club tournaments, so check the format before expecting a coached introduction.
The official location page confirms Williamsburg at 307 Kent Avenue and Dumbo at 257 Water Street, both in Brooklyn. Select the specific NYC club when booking: the business also operates outside New York.
A clinic is the starting point to investigate if you need technique explained. For games, ask how levels are matched, whether visitors can book, and what equipment is included or available to hire. The cited programme page does not establish a women-only session; confirm any women-focused event through its own listing.
Make the second visit easier to arrange
Before leaving your first session, find out how to play with the group again. That can mean registering for the next clinic, joining the organiser’s level-based group or booking another matched-play event. Get the actual joining route while the organiser is there.
Once you know what the session involves, use our guide to balancing racket sports and gym training to place it alongside strength work. For help with the first visit itself, read joining a sports club as a beginner.
On Form Club builds training in focused 14-day blocks and can reorganise the plan as commitments change. Build your next fortnight around the court session you want to keep.
